11. Teaching practice

1.1 procedures of your teaching

Motivation Part:

Teacher asks about what natural disasters often occur in their country
Teacher asks about what are the common causes of this disaster
The teacher plays a video about an earthquake and tsunami that happened in Indonesia
Then students will be asked, “as a young student, how are you going to help in preventing these disasters?” (pick one)

Lesson Development:
Teacher explains about modals verb in English
Teacher gives examples of each modal

Synthesis:

Students will be asked to work in pairs and come up with a short skit. They must choose one from the given situations below. They must use modals in their skit.
1. You have a bad cold with aches, congestion, and fever.
2. You have a big exam tomorrow but can’t decide whether to study or go to the movies with a friend
3. You arrive at your favorite park to find but it full of trash
4. You see someone steal something from a store

Application/Valuing:

Teacher asks about what value/s have you learned from modals?
They are asked to recall all the hardships and challenges that they are going through right now than write themselves a motivational letter using all the modals that we have talked about. Thay may only repeat the modal twice.

1.2 Time management and organizing activities

Topic: Modal Verbs
Teaching time: 75 minutes
Objective(s) / Aim(s):
A student should be able to:
1. Identify the different models and their usages
2. Compose sentences using Modals
Materials (Visuals): Video about Natural Disaster, Motivational letter
Function: Personal communication
Vocabularies: Informal language
Grammar: Simple Present Tense

1.3 Problem solving

Problems:

Some media could not be used properly
Overload students in one EFL classroom

Solutions:

I used gestures and other medias such as whiteboard, power point presentation, and to help me explaining the lessons/instructions. When students still did not understand, I explained the materials again by using another technique.
I made sure that all media could be used well in prior to teaching for the next meetings.
Asked the EFL teachers to give advice on how to handle big classes. They suggested me to use fun methods and techniques while teaching so that they would pay attention.

1.4 Classroom management

There are nearly 4 students in each class. Teaching young learners to take courage and perseverance, especially if we teach such big classes. At this point, after observing the EFL teachers in prior to doing the practicum, I noted that I needed to use fun methods and techniques in teaching English so that students were willing to listen and pay attention to what I was saying.
However, things did not go as well as I expected. I still found problems while teaching big classes. This was probably because some students, especially the ones sitting at the back seats, did not understand English very well. It caused them having less attention while they were listening to English instructions/lessons.

1.5 your overall impression in teaching

While I was teaching there I did not get a significant problem. Students pay attention to the teacher well and they are very cooperative in the teaching and learning process. I did not experience communication problems because they use English very well. they are also very active asking if they do not understand something.
